As a San Diego family photographer, I love getting to photograph at all the different types of backdrops San Diego has to offer. The beach is usually the go to spot for many families in San Diego. There are so many to choose from and such a sigh to see! There are however, other lovely nature spots around San Diego too. You have the diverse Balboa Park, filled with beautiful architecture and greenery! If you are wanting more of a meadow feel, then there is the beautiful Los Peñasquitos Ranch House! It changes a little depending on the season. For example, in the late winter, early spring, the meadow is super green. All the other times, it turns yellow. So plan accordingly. In these Los Peñasquitos Ranch House Family Photos | C+C we shot in the fall, so it was yellow.
The time of the day also affects the lighting. For example, the sunrises behind the meadow hills. So for morning shoots the sun will be behind your clients. The tree area will be a little more shaded than normal. If you want the photos a little warmer and have the sun coming through the trees, then I would suggest an afternoon shoot. When you are doing a sunset session, then I would wait to shoot the meadow part till the end, with the blue light hour. If you are shooting in the morning, then I would shoot the meadow part first. The sun is super exposed there. The earlier the better.
There are a lot of places to photography at. If it is your first time, then I would definitely recommend scouting the location before your session. Make sure to allocate enough time per spot to make sure you don’t run out of time.
