Los Peñasquitos Canyon Maternity Photos | Shauri + Thomas

As a San Diego photographer it is important to always have a rolodex of locations to shoot at. Los Peñasquitos Canyon is currently one of my favorite places to shoot portraits at. So far I have only shot there in the summer and fall, but I am very curious to see what blossoms there in the spring time!

This location offers so many diverse backdrops! From willow trees to meadow, from cactus to barn door! All the colors and all the feels to make you think you are out in the country! I loved how for this maternity shoot, the couple brought along their dog too! Always a fun addition and who doesn’t love a dog?

The couple wanted a morning shoot, so we made sure to start early to avoid harsh light. The best time to shoot in the morning is the first two hours after sunrise. Once you get closer to high noon, the light can get very harsh. I thought strategically and decided to shoot in the open spaces first, and then, as the morning went on, shoot where I could seek shade from the trees. So many trees to choose from!

The couple had two outfit changes. Normally couples like to bounce ideas off me with wardrobe ideas. Here they didn’t and had I known she was thinking of wearing overalls I would have suggested an alternative. Overalls, although super cute, hide the one thing that was our focus during the maternity session, the belly! We still got some cute photos, but I would always advise to consult with your photographer on wardrobe as they may have some key insight.

When scheduling maternity shoots, I recommend starting to book the session anytime after 7 months. Everyone shows differently and feels differently. Some women can be on their feet up until they give birth while others are on bed rest. So I always recommend asking the client when they feel confident and comfortable and confirm date!
