As a La Jolla portrait photographer, it’s very refreshing when a person wants portraits of themselves. I think it’s empowering to have your photos taken alone and feel comfortable in your own skin. I feel like many people think they need a special occasion or a significant other or family to have professional photos taken. You don’t! If you want to have beautiful images of yourself, go for it! It doesn’t have to be a huge production! You can go outdoors somewhere (unless you prefer a studio setting) and one outfit and just be in the moment! You can always ask your photographer for a location suggestion or you can let your photographer know what you envision. Your photographer will be more than happy to find the best location for your vision! If you want to take it another step forward, you can create a Pinterest board with ideas of what you would like your photos to look like. Keep in mind that they won’t be identical, but it gives your photographer an idea of your creative look.
Choosing a location will help you figure out the right outfit. You don’t want to wear a formal dress with heels if you choose the beach. I mean if you want to, you can , but you may want to guide your wardrobe with the backdrop aesthetic. So you can either think location first or outfit first. Whichever is most important. Now I mentioned you don’t have to make it a huge production, so if you need to do hair and makeup, you an do it yourself. If you feel like splurging, then you can have it professionally done. Just note, when shooting at the beach, your curls, will turn into waves and then frizz very quickly!
