As a La Jolla family photographer, I love when I get to show off San Diego’s beautiful coastline to out of towners. San Diego is definitely a travel destination and what better way to remember such a wonderful trip than with a portrait session, especially a family portrait session when you are traveling with your loved ones. Instead of having the entire trip cause on cell phone and with selfies or with one person missing in the group photo, having a professional family photo session makes sure that everyone is in the photo and looking great! Their eldest daughter was a senior in high school ready to go off to college. So this was an even more special trip. They got a beautiful sunset! Whenever there are some clouds in the sky, especially in popcorn looking pattern, you know you are in for a great sunset! The light bounces off the clouds and gives a magical feel. As I usually try to do, which is schedule the session when sunset is near low tide, aligned with their travel dates! This doesn’t always work out, especially when you have out of towners, but when it does, it’s amazing. When you have locals, I always suggest dates that fit in that low tide near sunset range.
When shooting family portraits, you want to make sure you get all the combo’s captured. The entire family as a whole, the parents together, the siblings together, each parent with each sibling and then all siblings and then each sibling individual. Always ask the parents if they want individual portraits of themselves. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. You can always let your clients know that if they would like feedback on their outfits that they can send you photos of the looks too.
