As an Encinitas family photographer, we always see an influx of family portrait request during the fall. Many people take this time to prepare for their holiday card and so they want to use the most recent photo taken. I always feel like some families are mad dashing to get everything ready when we have the whole year to take family photos. I totally get it when families wait till fall if they want the “fall” backdrop. We don’t get that much here in San Diego, but there are a few spots with fall foliage. However, if you are taking your fall family portraits at the beach, then I say start earlier in the year when it’s a bit warmer! We are fortunate that for the most part, the beach is accessible all year long, but if you don’t want to wear so many layers, then book your family portrait session at the end of summer. If cozy sweaters are your thing, then wait for the fall. Wardrobe is something I get asked about a lot when if comes to family portraits. I like to tell people to stick within three colors. You can do different shades of those colors. If someone wants to wear a pattern, then one person should. For every five people, one person can wear a pattern. If not, it gets too busy and distracting. Unless the patterns are on kids and thus there isn’t so much of it.
Definitely bring your pets! They are part of the family and when the shoot is at the beach, they have a ball!!! Always make sure you are following the beach rules for dogs. Make sure you book your family session during the time they are allowed to be on the beach (leashed).
