La Jolla Cove Family Photos | M + N

As a La Jolla family photographer, I love sharing its beautiful coastline with clients for their family photos. There are so many locations to choose from, La Jolla Shores, Scripps Pier, Windansea, the reefs south of there and of course La Jolla Cove! My top two spots are Scripps Pier and La Jolla Cove. Both offer its own beauty. The former, when its low tide, exposes you to the underwater world of rocks and cliffs. The latter, as you can see in these La Jolla Cove Family Photos | M + N, offers beautiful green landscape, palm trees, cliffs and the beautiful sea. If you want the beach but don’t want to necessarily get your toes wet, then this is a great option!

The best time of day to have your photos taken at the beach is at sunset. Especially in a place like La Jolla Cove. You can shoot there in the morning, but what happens is that the light is ‘cold’. The cliffs create shade while the rest of the place has bright light from the sun, so it’s also harsh light. It’s totally manageable, I have had to do morning shoots here. Ideally though, the hour before sunset. Now in this case, due to the little one’s bedtime, we started earlier than the magic hour. As you can, we had a lot of bright light. There is an area with cypress trees that is shaded at this time so we utilized that at the beginning of the shoot to let the sun go down a little.

What to wear at a San Diego beach family photo session? For men, or anyone wearing pants, I suggest dark color. You are most likely going to get your feet wet and with that your shins! When you wear light colored pants, you can see the difference in color between wet and dry. Plan on being barefoot, so usually outfits are more on the cute and casual side. I have had couples in formal wear, and sometimes they would just put on the heels while on the rock. Keep it cute and comfortable. Wear colors that you feel great in and fits that feel comfortable in. Always try on the looks in advance in case you need to make a wardrobe change. You don’t want to be stressing last minute.
